“Inclusive Design” or “Design for all” targets the final user of a product or an infrastructure taking into consideration all of his/her physical features. Hence, this design approach focuses on merging ergonomics and aesthetics to solve in an optimal way problems related to either health, mobility or sensory fragility. “Form follows function”.
From an inclusive design perspective “disability” is hence not a pesonal characteristics or a binary state (disabled vs. non-disabled). Disability is framed as “a mismatch between the needs of the individual and the design of the product, system or service”. Accessability is therefore the ability of the design or system to match the requirements of the individual by knowing the user, the context and the goal.
The goal of our non-profit INclusive by DZIGN is precisely that of promoting inclusive design – and its empathetic dimension as the final user is prioritized from the inception – as a tool to foster social and cultural inclusion across generations; and to help solve related societal challenges. This is done through cooperative projects involving young designers – from Luxembourg and from our partner countries -, experts as well as industrial partners.
How it all started:
In November 2011 a Luxembourg delegation of some 30 business women visited Israel. During this visit, the delegation attended a workshop hosted by The College of Management Academic Studies (COMAS) in Rishon LeZion on intercultural and intergenerational communication. The day ended with a visit of the “School of Interdisciplinary Design” of COMAS. When the idea of organizing a second trip to Israel came up in 2015 it was agreed that the opportunity should be taken to tie such a visit to a project which would allow developing and strengthening ties between the two countries. That is why a handful of women among the initial delegation founded the non-profit INclusive by DZIGN and launched the current project.
